Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute (STI) / University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)

The STI multi-organ transplant fellowship offers hands-on experience under Dr. Abhinav Humar’s leadership.  Current rotations in liver (120 cases/year), kidney/pancreas (240 cases/year), lap donor nephrectomies (60 cases/year), and pediatric transplantation are offered at Montefiore Hospital, the Pittsburgh Veterans Administration Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.  In addition to ASTS core cases, experience is also offered in islet autotransplantation, HPB, multivisceral transplants, intestinal rehab, and advanced GI surgery.  We also have near 100% night coverage by our advanced practice providers.   Our center is recognized as one of the oldest, having performed more than 7,000 adult liver transplants since its inception.  Candidates should be American Board C/E or foreign equivalent, passed USMLE Step 3, and eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania.
