On February 14, 2018, while at a medical conference with his family, Dr. Richi Gill suffered a C6/7 complete spinal cord injury, with loss of sensation and movement below the injury level. After enduring two major high-risk surgeries to stabilize the spine and a two-week admission in the intensive care unit, he is now in stable condition.
Richdeep Gill (or “Richi” to many of us) grew up in the NE neighborhood of Whitehorn in Calgary and graduated from Lester B. Pearson High School in 1998. He played basketball for the University of Calgary Dinos from 1999-2002 while completing his undergraduate Bachelor degree. He subsequently completed his Medical Degree, residency in General Surgery, Minimally Invasive/Bariatrics Fellowship, and PhD at the University of Alberta.
Dr. Gill is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He is a busy clinical surgeon at the Peter Lougheed Hospital and South Health Campus, delivering excellent compassionate patient care in foregut and acute general surgery. He has been strongly involved in developing the bariatric surgery program in Calgary. Dr. Gill has published over 100 peer reviewed articles, multiple book chapters and has presented and lectured at multiple national and international surgical meetings.
Richi is a supportive and loving husband to his wife Raman, and a devoted father to his three beautiful children, Saava (8), Akaash (7) and Arwyn (5). Raman and the children have been strong and resilient during this difficult time.
Despite a very busy clinical and academic schedule, Richi always makes it a priority to give back to the community. He is a pillar and advocate in the Sikh community and supports many local Calgary charities including the Getting Ready for Inclusion Today (G.R.I.T.) Calgary Society. As a sports enthusiast and avid athlete, Richi is passionate about mentoring students participating in basketball programs at both Lester B. Pearson High School and University of Calgary.
Richi is fiercely determined and motivated to regain as much mobility and independence as possible, so that he can care for himself as well as his family and patients. Intense physical therapy and rehabilitation will be the mainstay of treatment. Unfortunately, the most advanced and necessary equipment is expensive and not currently available in Calgary, Canada. As a result, we have organized a fundraising effort to raise funds to support his rehabilitation. This is the estimated total cost for purchasing three specific devices: LokomatPro (~$350,000 CAD), ErigoPro (~$150,000 CAD), RT300 (~$40,000 CAD), and Xcite FES System (~$35,000 CAD). In addition, extensive and costly home and vehicle modifications ($200,000 CAD)) are expected. Finally, Richi is planning on participating in stem cell therapy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester ($140,000 CAD).
To support the Gill family during this very difficult time, his colleagues and close friends have organized a fundraising effort. Our goal is to help Richi and his family through the long and costly rehabilitation process while alleviating some of the financial concerns associated with his inability to work. We are asking for donations of $1000, $3000 or $5000 to support this effort. Single or recurring donations are welcome. Donation methods are as follows.
