The purpose of the Endoscopy Committee is to promote endoscopy training within the Canadian General Surgical Community. This includes supporting the development of training for medical students, residents and attending surgeons, both in-person and virtually.
In-Person Education
An advanced interactive one-day endoscopy program designed for practicing surgeons, residents and other health care professionals interested in learning more about endoscopy is offered as part of the Canadian Surgery Forum (CSF). In particular, it provides an opportunity for trainees and practicing academic or community surgeons to gain exposure to novel devices and endoscopic approaches. The Committee has advanced the delivery of the program through a train-the-trainer program, growing the faculty who are able to deliver the in-person program.
The Committee has also developed a hands-on polypectomy course for practicing general surgeons, offered as part of the Ontario Association of General Surgeons (OAGS) Surgical Symposium. This course aims to improve and standardize the training and practice of polypectomy, and ultimately improve the quality and safety of endoscopic procedures.
Basic Endoscopy Skills Training Video (aka BEST Video)
The Committee has developed a teaching video that demonstrates good technique for advancing the colonoscope and controlling and correcting loops. For trainees new to endoscopy, the video provides an overview of basic best practices to implement into your routine. For experienced endoscopists, the video covers more advanced techniques, including torque steering, frequent patient repositioning, and water insufflation. In addition, there is an opportunity to answer self-assessment questions after viewing the video to earn MOC Section 3 credits. The BEST video is available on the CAGS Learning & Resource Centre.
Endoscopy Photo Atlas
The Committee has developed an endoscopy photo atlas as a quick visual reference for the broad range of pathology encountered in the GI tract. The photo atlas is available on the CAGS Learning & Resource Centre. The Committee welcomes feedback, as well as new submissions of interesting photos from CAGS members to keep this atlas growing and up to date. Please contact learn@cags-accg.ca if you are interested in contributing content or to provide feedback.
